Church History
First Baptist Church of Swedesboro, NJ was born on December 23, 1892. It was during the latter part of the 19th Century that the small, prosperous village of Swedesboro, NJ became the home of God fearing colored Christians of the Baptist faith who had migrated from Virginia, Maryland and other Southern States to escape the bondage of slavery. After the Civil War, it was important to unite with family, seek employment and achieve prosperity as freedmen. Just prior to the Civil War, Swedesboro, NJ was an, "underground railroad station" for slaves attempting to escape the institution of slavery.
Those who migrated to Swedesboro, NJ were proud; hard working people who held onto their dreams and beliefs that through Christ, all things are possible.
Because there wasn't a Baptist Edifice in the village in which to worship, First Baptist Church of Swedesboro was founded with the assembly of meetings held regularly in homes, Wheelright Blacksmith Shop, Guest Hall, The Mealy Hall and over at the Swedesboro Drug Store.
As they continued to meet, they became a strongly unified group of Christian believers, placing all of their faith in God's will, to establish a church. They prayed for direction from God that they become incorporated and on December 23, 1892; because of their diligence, faithfulness and hard work, God answered with the birth and incorporation of First Baptist Church of Swedesboro, NJ.
In 1992, First Baptist Church of Swedesboro celebrated their Centennial Anniversary. Over the past hundred years, we have evolved into a thriving, multi-cultural, family church believing in One Lord, One Faith, One Baptism.
